Automotive-Grade PCBA Demand Surges for EV & Energy Storage

Since2026, China’s PCBA industry has seen stark structural divergence. Demand forautomotive-grade circuit boards supporting new energy vehicles and energystorage has boomed in tandem, emerging as a core driver of high-endmanufacturing orders. Leading manufacturers are running their automotiveproduction lines at full capacity around the clock, while smaller processorsare rushing to set up certified production lines to tap into this market.

Industrydata shows year-on-year growth of roughly 42% in overall automotive PCBA ordersthis year, with energy storage circuit board demand rising by 39%. Major growthcomes from high-value products including BMS boards, 800V electronic controlunits and PCS mainboards for energy storage converters.

AsNEV penetration rises steadily, vehicles carry far more electronic components.PCBA assemblies are widely used in electric drive systems, intelligent drivingdomain controllers and on-board charging modules, pushing the per-vehicle PCBAvalue far above that of gasoline cars. The popularization of 800V high-voltageplatforms has raised stricter standards for substrate insulation, heat resistanceand vibration resistance, making standard consumer electronics production linesunfit for such manufacturing.

Theenergy storage sector is also undergoing rapid expansion. Deployments ofresidential, commercial and utility-scale energy storage systems areaccelerating, with steady inflows of overseas orders from Europe and NorthAmerica. Energy storage converter control boards must operate reliably underwide temperature swings, high humidity and salt spray environments. Conformalcoating and comprehensive reliability testing have become mandatory factoryprocedures, extending order lead times at qualified EMS firms to two to threemonths.

Stringententry barriers are reshaping market competition. Automotive-grade PCBAproduction requires IATF16949 certification and full traceability coveringcomponents, soldering and testing, alongside rigorous aging tests fortemperature cycling and vibration. Less than 5% of domestic PCBA factories candeliver mass batches to mainstream vehicle and energy storage clients. Manyprocessors are phasing out low-margin consumer electronics lines and investingin dedicated automotive-grade SMT and testing equipment.

Industryinsiders note tight supply of specialty raw materials including high-CTIsubstrates and thick copper foils. Factories with complete certifications andstable supply chains hold stronger pricing power. Analysts expect robust demandfor electrification and energy storage to sustain the automotive-grade PCBAboom, with consistent process compliance and reliable delivery as corecompetitive edges.
